Most people use smartphones for listening to music, playing games, browsing the internet and social networking where phones were once primarily for making calls and texting. Background Over the last decade or so, people all around the world have been satisfying their computing needs and multimedia requirements through their desktops and laptops. But things are changing really fast with the introduction of smartphones and handheld devices a few years back. More and more users are adopting these devices every day to perform further on the go and always stay connected. Technology giants are releasing newer and enhanced handheld devices every month to grab a slice of the market share thus creating endless choices for the end user. Inflation Inflation is and has been a highly debated phenomenon in economics. Even the use of the word "inflation" has different meanings in different contexts. Many economists, businessmen, and politicians maintain that moderate inflation levels are needed to drive consumption, assuming that higher levels of spending are crucial for economic growth. Understanding Inflation Inflation is often used to describe the impact of rising oil or food prices on the economy. For example, if the price of oil goes from $75 a barrel to $100 a barrel, input prices for businesses will increase and transportation costs for everyone will also increase. This may cause many other prices to rise in response. However, most economists consider the actual definition of inflation to be slightly different. Inflation is a function of the supply and demand for money, meaning that producing relatively more dollars causes each dollar to become less valuable, forcing the general price level to ri...

Meeting Etiquettes To Increase Productivity

Meeting Etiquettes  Effective meetings held in an office space should be properly planned, organised, and controlled. It is also important that group members contribute to the discussion. Adherence to the proper etiquette for a business meeting establishes respect among meeting participants, helps the meeting begin and end on time, and fosters an atmosphere of cooperation. A lack of etiquette and poor planning are two of the main reasons why many business meetings fail. Teach your employees business meeting etiquette to ensure that your business's meetings are effective. Almost every company in the country currently relies on meetings as an essential component of its business. High-level meetings are held to discuss and set a direction for the company; low-level meetings are used to delegate work and disseminate information; other meetings in between try to fill in the gaps. No matter where you work or who you work for, meetings are an important part of the job. Ther...

Customer Rejection

Emotional Intelligence What to do when the customer feels that you don't have 'enough' experience to work on their accounts? Losing an account, or failing at landing one as a new (graduate) employee is disappointing. But if you want to succeed in this business, you can’t take it personally. As a quick reminder, rather than pushing yourself against the other person's beliefs with facts (which creates resistance) you show the other person how their beliefs actually support your viewpoint, rather than the viewpoint they currently support. During my research on this topic, I read an article by Geoffrey James, editor at Inc Magazine, for changing another person’s mind. This column provides an example of this process: changing the mind of a reluctant customer. This is a three-step process: 1. Validate the beliefs   The opposite of "pressure creates resistance" is that "acceptance creates flexibility." Showing that you understand the other ...

Stand Together Against Bullying

People are often hesitant to make a complaint; why do you think this is?  "JUST because no one complains doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Most victims of workplace bullying suffer silently — but the reason isn’t what you might think."   Firstly, many victims of workplace bullying suffer silently out of fear of retribution and because it’s often hard for them to fully explain what is happening and how it started, according to new research recently published in the Management Communication Quarter. As part of their study, researchers conducted in-depth interviews with nearly 50 victims of workplace bullying. They discovered that many of the victims felt that no one would believe them, or they were afraid of being labelled as a crybaby or a whiner, so they didn’t report the situation to a manager or someone else in the organisation. (source: Business News Daily) Besides not wanting to become ostracised, bullying victims are also hesitant to tell their s...
